The UOD Foundation seeks to empower people in under-served communities to discover and pursue their dreams. We do this by identifying communities with minimal resources, but an abundance of hope. We then focus our efforts in our two areas of expertise: education and economic development. In 2007, we discovered the mountain village of Vuelta Grande in Central Guatemala. Vuelta Grande sits just outside of the affluent town of Antigua, a popular tourist destination. Despite its proximity to this affluence, Vuelta Grande is one of the poorest communities in the country. What we noticed right away in visiting this village, though, was its potential. There are talented young people desperate to go to school. There are ambitious women yearning to grow their small businesses to be able to give their children a better life. There is a group of community leaders willing and able to work hard in order to build the infrastructure of this village to sustain the kind of upward mobility they desire. Through a partnership with La Union, we have been successful in providing opportunities for dozens of kids to attend school, more than 20 women to start and grow small businesses and for the entire village to initiate a community-owned enterprise that generates ongoing revenue for large-scale development projects. Our efforts in Vuelta Grande are the model for future endeavors. We aim to take this approach to communities throughout the world so that Dreamers have the opportunity they ache for: to achieve their maximum potential and make the world a better place in their own unique way.
