As Beth's family was boxing up her personal belongings, they discovered a finished manuscript for a book she had been writing over the last two years of her life. A Dream Journey: The Incredible Story of the Founding of Eastside College Preparatory School

East Palo Alto, an impoverished town that sits on the east side of the 101 Freeway across from Hewlett Packard, Google, and the incredible wealth of Silicon Valley, had no high school for two decades. From the mid-seventies until the mid-nineties, a young teen's only option for secondary school was to be bussed miles away into a totally different community. Unprepared, faced with abysmal expectations and negative peer pressure, most East Palo Alto teens dropped out. Over two-thirds did not finish high school.

But in 1996, Chris Bischof, a young student teacher from nearby Menlo Park, teamed up with four other talented individuals and eight brave 14-year-olds to found Eastside College Preparatory School. Against incredible odds and armed only with faith in their dream and a tenacious will to succeed, this group achieved what many considered to be an impossibility—a college preparatory school in the heart of East Palo Alto. Twelve years later, Eastside Prep has impacted the lives of over 400 East Palo Alto teens, and fully 100% of Eastside graduates have gone on to four-year universities.
